Emergency Services Response Tested (1 June 2007)
Fua’amotu’s Airport Emergency Plan was put to the
test today in a simulated crash emergency, designed to test the
airport’s emergency response agencies to such an event.
The exercise was planned and conducted by the Emergency Response
Committee, which is chaired by Defence.
The exercise involved teams from all airport agencies including the
Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (RFFS), Air Traffic Control and
Aviation Security as well as Customs, Immigration and Quarantine.
Providing a real time test of the responses of airport teams, the
exercise also tested response times of external agencies such as the
Police, Hospital and Defence.
One of the stars of the exercise was the new Airport Fire Services
Response Vehicle.
The arrival of the new fire truck for the RFFS at Fua’amotu
Airport is one of the first acquirements in a development program aimed
at improving airport safety.
As one of the latest models of fire rescue vehicles on the market, the
new truck meets international safety standards for airports accepting
Category 8 level aircraft, such as the Boeing 767.
Part of the ongoing development program will see three of the RFFS
other vehicles scheduled for refurbishment in the near future, ensuring
the airport continues to meet its ongoing safety obligations to the
travelling public.
Tonga Airports Limited (TAL) will assume control of the operation of
the Kingdom’s airports on 2 July 2007, and is pleased to be
associated with the development program.
TAL looks forward to further improving airport safety and security in
the near future and improving the level of services and amenities
offered to travellers and the airlines.
