The collection of Departure Tax at
Fua’amotu
International Airport is now a thing of the past.
As of 1 February 2008, all applicable fees and taxes are now included in the cost of your ticket.
Incorporated into the ticket cost is $55
in fees and
taxes, which is paid to Tonga Airports Limited by the airlines you
traveled
with.
These fees and taxes pay for the operation of the airport, ensure that safety and security are maintained to the highest standards, and over time, to the upgrading of passenger facilities.
The only persons exempt from these fees and taxes are infants under 2 years old who are not occupying a seat and certain diplomatic and airline staff.
Tonga Airports Limited essentially
collects these
monies from the people who use the airport, not from the broader
community.
This
is a fair and common
practice employed by airports worldwide and serves to ensure the safety
and
convenience of those traveling.
