What to do on Ha'apai:
Ha'apai is made up of many small islands offering white sandy beaches
and pristine waters. Seen from the air, the Ha'apai islands sit like
jewels among complex reefs teeming with sea-life.
The main island of the Ha'apai group is also named Ha'apai,
with the quaint old town of Pangai as its centre. The majority of
Ha'apai islands are flat - excepting the live volcano Tofua, and the
extinct Kao.
On Ha'apai, life is slow paced and extremely relaxed. Spend
your time swimming, snorkelling, fishing, surfing, or doing absolutely
nothing. As in all Tongan waters, in Ha’apai, game fish are
plentiful.
History enthusiasts may also be interested to know that the
Mutiny on HMS Bounty took place in Ha’apai waters in 1789. It was
here that Captain Bligh and his loyal men were cast away in rowboats to
begin their epic voyage of endurance – a 6,500km journey to
Timor.
