Fua'amotu Airport - Tongatapu

Located on the island of Tongatapu, this is Tonga’s main airport. It has separate domestic and international terminals, active air traffic controls and Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (RFFS).

Current international services provided from the airport include non-stop international services to Apia, Auckland, Nadi, Suva, Sydney and Wellington. There is another via Apia, same plane/flight number service to Los Angeles - route operated by Air New Zealand only.

Getting to & from the airport:
Taxi’s meet incoming international and domestic flights. The standard fare for up to four passengers between the airport and Nuku’alofa is T$30.

Many hotels and guesthouses also offer airport transfers for guests. These need to be arranged prior to your arrival.

What to do on Tongatapu:
The main island of Tongatapu is home to the capital of Nuku’alofa.

A diverse range of attractions awaits visitors including the blowholes, sacred bats, stretches of white sandy beaches and Captain Cook’s Landing Site. The eastern side of the island is home to the ancient capital of Mu’a with its fascinating Terrace Tombs. Nearby is the mysterious Ha’amonga – the Stonehenge of the South Pacific.

Other must-see attractions in Nuku’alofa include the Royal Palace, Royal Tombs, Tongan National Centre, Talamahu Market and the many churches dotted throughout the city.

Tongatapu Island is flat so getting around is easy by foot, bike, car or taxi.

Many offshore islands are a short ferry ride away and add a different dimension to the Tonga experience. Take a leisurely stroll, snorkel or swim, or stay overnight at islands such as ‘Eua, Fafa or Pangaimotu.
